How to take care of your baby’s skin

Your baby’s skin is very delicate which is why you need to apply proper skin care and bathing in order to maintain the healthy smooth texture of your baby’s skin. There are a lot of skin conditions that your baby can have which can be permanent and would lead to scars that they would carry with them as they grow up. Here are some tips that you can do to maintain your baby’s skin:

BATHING

• When it comes to bathing your baby, you should avoid using regular soaps – use mild, moisturizing and unscented soaps instead. Take note that too much soap can dry out the skin.

• Newborns should not be bathed daily. This is because their skin is very delicate. Giving sponge baths would be more appropriate instead then use a soft cloth to dab the baby’s body dry.

• To keep your baby’s skin from being itchy and dry, add non-allergenic oil in the body’s bathwater.

• After bathing, when you dry the baby’s skin pay more attention to the neck, the naval and the area behind the ears.

DRESSING

• You should dress your baby in loose fitting clothes that are made out of light cotton. This will help keep your baby’s skin comfortably cool. This will also help especially in warm humid weather since it provides better air circulation.

SKIN PRODUCTS

• Do not use baby powder or talc powder on your baby because it is abrasive and can irritate your baby’s skin.

• Take care not to expose the baby under the sun too much. You can use sunscreens that are specially made for babies.

• Take note that coloring agents in baby products are a big no-no.

DIAPER

• When you wipe the bottom area of your baby do not rub it roughly. Use warm water to clean the baby’s bottom.

• When changing your baby’s diaper let the baby stay undressed for a while if the room is well ventilated. Fresh air plays a significant part in preventing diaper rash from taking place.

• Avoid using alcohol based baby wipes when you change your baby’s diapers since they can irritate your baby’s skin.
